A watermark on a contract or internal report leaves a trace if it leaks, or flags a document as not yet final. Getting the wording and placement right makes a big difference.
What text to use
It depends on the purpose: "Confidential" plus a company name for leak deterrence, "DRAFT" for a document still under review, or a name and date for protecting a personal file. Keep it short โ long text repeated across every page hurts readability.
Placement and opacity
A diagonal watermark across the center of the page at partial opacity is the standard choice. Too opaque and it obscures the text; too faint and it might as well not be there. If the document will be printed, check that it's still legible in black-and-white.
A watermark alone isn't full security
A watermark deters casual redistribution and marks the source โ it doesn't prevent editing. For truly sensitive documents, pair it with limiting who receives the file and adding a password.
Wording by purpose
