Copying the text inside a PDF into another document is common โ but the result depends entirely on what kind of PDF you're working with.
Text-based vs scanned image PDFs
If dragging over a sentence actually selects it, the PDF is text-based and extraction works cleanly. If dragging does nothing and the whole page behaves like a photo, it's a scanned image PDF, and plain text extraction will return nothing.
Scanned image? Run OCR first
In a scanned PDF, letters exist only as pixels, so you need OCR to recognize the text before extraction means anything. Skipping straight to extraction on a scan will correctly return an empty result.
When line breaks or tables get mangled
PDF often stores only visual position, not paragraph structure, so extracted text can have different line breaks than the original. Documents with lots of tables may need manual cleanup afterward.
Diagnosis and fix
| Symptom | PDF type | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Text is selectable by dragging | Text-based | Extract directly |
| Dragging selects nothing | Scanned image | Run OCR first |
| Line breaks look wrong after extracting | Complex layout | Clean up manually |
