Scanner settings or scanning a small document on an oversized glass bed often leaves wide blank margins or dark borders around the actual content. Cropping keeps just the area you need.
Why margins show up
A scanner that doesn't auto-detect paper size, or a document scanned on a bed larger than the page, leaves extra space outside the real content. Photos of documents have the same problem when the background gets captured too.
When each page needs a different crop
If every page is the same size, set the crop area once and apply it to all pages. But if scanned pages are positioned slightly differently, adjust the crop per page to avoid accidentally cutting off content.
Rotate first, then crop
If pages are also tilted, rotate them straight before cropping. Cropping first often leaves new margins after rotating, meaning you'd have to do it twice.
